Nice variety & nearly all recipes are from scratch.,
What a pleasant surprise! The majority of dessert and cake cookbooks I’ve downloaded are full of recipes that call for cake mixes, pudding mixes, canned pie filling, Cool-Whip (ICK!), canned frosting, and other ‘convenience’ foods.
All of these thirty recipes are made from scratch with the exception of Chocolate Turtle Cake (which calls for devil’s food cake mix, instant pudding mix, and canned dulce de leche, the latter ingredient not something I’ve seen in stores) and the recipes for Boston Cream Cake and Berry Pudding Cake, both of which use instant pudding mix.
The variety of cakes is rather impressive. With recipes for five Classic Cakes, three Sugar-Free Cakes, three Vegan Cakes, three Healthy Cakes, six Specialty Cakes, four Fruit and Berry Cakes, three Fall Favorites and three Breakfast cakes, there is something for everyone.
The Lemon Raspberry Cake and the Coconut Cake both sound particularly delicious.
The book is well-formatted and there are…drum roll, please…PHOTOS! I really appreciate a cookbook author taking the time to include photographs. I’ll have to admit, even though I don’t normally use cake and pudding mixes, the picture of the Chocolate Turtle Cake makes me want to try it anyhow!

|Scratch Cakes,
Great little guide with basic recipes for well known and favorite cakes. A lot of books out there have cake/cookie/bar recipes that use pre-mixed cake mix (gasp!), and they are fine for what they are, but I always prefer doing things from scratch and this book fits the bill. I have not yet actually tried any of the recipes, but I am an experienced cook and baker, and the recipes all “read” well.
